Partial Discharge (PD) Testing and Monitoring

“Partial Discharge (PD)- A localized electrical discharge that only partially bridges the insulation between conductors and which can or cannot occur adjacent to a conductor.” – IEC 60270 Definition.

Partial Discharge is caused by defects and degradation in HV electrical insulation.

PD activity will eventually lead to complete insulation failure and a fault between phases or to ground, causing an unplanned outage and downtime.

Applications:

  • Insulation Faults in HV Cables.
  • Detecting Insulation Defects in Both Air-Insulated and Gas-Insulated Switchgear.
  • Insulation Defects in Both Oil-Filled and Dry-Type Transformers.
  • Insulation Faults in Rotating Machines.

Partial Discharge Monitoring across MV/HV Asset Life Cycle

For assets operating at 3.3kV and above, our Partial Discharge (PD) test and monitoring systems, in partnership with MONITRA, assist oil and gas operators in maintaining continuous production operations.

These systems provide the most effective early warning indicators of electrical insulation deterioration in medium and high-voltage (MV/HV) networks.

Partial Discharge Monitoring Technology

Implementing PD monitoring technology enables operators to enhance plant efficiency, safety, and reliability by reducing unplanned downtime and preventing catastrophic failures.

Whether deployed at project inception or during end-of-life extension, we offer support for critical networks throughout the asset lifecycle to mitigate the consequences of failure.

Sensors Range

The installation of partial discharge monitoring sensors during the construction phase or scheduled outages enables operators to prevent future shutdowns for PD monitoring or testing.

How is PD Caused?

  • Poor design, manufacture, or installation errors.
  • Contamination, third-party damage/external influences.
  • Lack of maintenance or servicing.
  • Passive sensors are attached to detect electrical charges, EM radiation, or acoustic waves.
  • Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD).

How is PD Identified?

  • Passive sensors are attached to detect electrical charges, EM radiation, or acoustic waves.

How is PD Located?

  • Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD).
  • Waveshape Analysis.
  • Time of Flight (TOF).
  • Online Cable PD Mapping.
